“As business owners and employees, we need paid family and medical leave insurance with the most inclusive definition of family possible. In several states, LGTBQ couples can be fired from their job if their employer found out they are married, so many couple will not take advantage of that right for fear of losing jobs, homes, etc. In my family, we have have two sons and a team of co-parents who do not all live in the same house. My son would consider his birth mom (me), his adoptive mom (my partner who I married), and his stepbrother’s mom all as his ‘grown-ups’ even though only two of us have a legal claim to him. The same is true of my stepson. We live three blocks away from my son’s birth mom, and if my stepson was sick or my partner was sick, it’s highly likely she’d be a part of the care team. We should be able to make the decision about how to best care for our children.”
